Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
