European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
